The Union built a ring of sixty-eight forts around Washington during the Civil War. Artillerists man a cannon at Fort Carson. Library of Congress.
Beyond Fort Marcy, there are several other sites to see along the northbound GW Parkway. The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail parallels the parkway 8.5 miles between Roosevelt Island and the American Legion Bridge. It connects to a network of trails leading all the way to Algonkian Regional Park. Claude Moore Colonial Farm is a tobacco demonstration farm from the eighteenth century. Finally, Turkey Run Park has the headquarters for the GW Parkway, as well as several trails through the thick woods along the river.
How to get there: Fort Marcy is accessed from the northbound GW Parkway four miles past Rosslyn. There is no southbound entrance.
